"I have a soda syphon, but I have lost the instructions!" Well here they are. Taken from an instruction sheet supplied with a Sparklets syphon, they will apply to most of the 'normal' syphons (Sparklets, ISI, Kayser, SodaKing etc etc).
First UseWhether brand new or recently acquired secondhand, rinse out with warm water (see below for detailed cleaning instructions).FillingPress the lever to ensure that the syphon is empty and there is no gas pressure. Unscrew the top and take out the syphon tube, making sure that the plastic sleeve remains in the body of the syphon. The plastic sleeve provides an air space which is essential to the normal operation of the syphon.Fill to the top with cold water - if the level falls a little afte filling, just leave it - do NOT top it up as the air space might be reduced. Add a soda tablet or a pinch of bicarbonate (double quantity if it is a 2 litre model such as the Sparklets Globemaster). Replace the syphon tube and screw the head firmly back on - take care not to cross the crew threads of course. ChargingInsert a bulb in to the bulb holder, with the neck of the bulb towards the open end of the holder. Lift the small hinged cover on the head of the syphon to expose the charging thread. Screw the holder on gently until a resistance is felt. Make sure that the bulb is held in correct alignment in the holder, then screw holder down quickle and wait until no more gas can be heard bubbling in to the water.
Shake the syphon vigorously for 15 seconds to dissolve the gas in the water. Removing bulbUnscrew bulb holder to remove empty bulb - there will be a gentle hiss: a loud hiss shows that the syphon was not shaken enough to dissolve all the gas. Push the hinged cover back down.Useful hints
CleaningYour syphon needs only an occasional rinse out. Before removing the syphon head for cleaning or refilling, make sure the syphon is empty by depressing the lever. Unscrew head and remove syphon tube, then remove the plastic sleeve fitted in the syphon by inmserting the projecting ends on the bulb holder into the slots on the plastic sleeve, twist and pull upwards (this is clearly Sparklets-specific, other models will vary). be sure to replace the plastic sleeve before filling with water. For glass syphons, there are some further cleaning suggestions in the article on Cleaning Your Syphon.
